Introduction

Rajasthan State Textbook Board was constituted by Government of Rajasthan by an administrative order in 1973 and it was to be recognised as an autonomous body registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1958. The Board was accordingly registered on 29.12.1973 and it formally came into existence on 1.01.1974.

The prime objective of Rajasthan State Textbook Board is to get the textbooks printed and distributed for students of class 1 to 8 studying in government and affiliated schools, after the textbooks are duly approved by the State Government. The books printed for free distribution under the government scheme of 'free distribution of textbooks in government schools' are made available to the gram panchayat nodal kendras in all districts from where they are taken by the school teachers. The books for sale are made available to the government-affiliated schools and private institutions through the registered booksellers from the distribution centres of the Board located in 33 districts.

By an order of the Government of Rajasthan p5(8) Edu.-1/Ele.Edu./2010 Dated 27.9.2010, Rajasthan State Text Book Board has been entrusted with the printing and distribution work for classes 9 to 12 also. The Board of the Secondary Education, Rajasthan however remains the curriculum making body for the above classes.
